Libya: LIA Falls Victim to Factional Politics

Along with the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) and the National Oil Corporation, the LIA divided into parallel western and eastern entities during the power struggle between rival governments, parliaments and armies that began in summer 2014. In recent weeks the LIA drama had taken another twist, with Hassan Bouhadi, the eastern LIA chairman recognized by the Baida-based government of Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni, facing increasing pressure from anti-GNA factions in eastern Libya for engaging with the UN-backed GNA.
