Libya: Filling the Silence: The Failed UN Process and Western Strikes on ISIL

Over the weekend the US claimed it had killed a senior ISIL figure in Libya in military airstrikes on 14 November. The target of the strikes around the eastern town of Derna was Abu Nabil, also known as Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al-Zubaydi, described as “an Iraqi national who was a long-time al-Qaeda operative and the senior ISIL leader in Libya.” According to Horizon contacts, Abu Nabil was a senior emir responsible for some of the most prolific Al-Qaeda in Iraq operational zones around Ramadi and Fallujah from 2004 to 2008. He also appears to have been the spokesman in the February 2015 video that showed the beheadings of 21 Coptic Christians.
