Libya: Eastern Oil Ports Change Hands: A Blow to Haftar

The capture of Libya’s two key eastern oil ports at Ras Lanuf and Sidra near the end of last week by anti-Haftar forces served as reality check for those who may have bought into the pro-Haftar narrative in recent months. Since Haftar’s forces seized the oil crescent’s four terminals last September, using a strategy of tribal outreach that resulted in the routing of controversial PFG commander Ibrahim Jadhran and his loyalists with little fighting, Haftar and his supporters have pushed a narrative that his army is in full control of much of Libya’s oil sector.
