Libya: Advances into Sirte May Push ISIL to the South

Last week fighters from the Al-Bunyan al-Marsous alliance pushed into Sirte and within days had evicted Islamic State forces from the city’s port and a number of residential districts in its eastern flank. These gains were complemented by other advances by forces under Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) commander Ibrahim Jadhran east of Sirte, where the PFG seized control of small towns including Ben Jawwad, Nofaliya and Harawa. The combined efforts of Al-Bunyan al-Marsous and Jadhran’s forces have succeeded in shrinking ISIL’s sphere of influence along Libya’s central coast to a fraction of what it was earlier this year.
