Kazakhstan: Zhanaozen Oil Strike Resolved Through Compromise: Implications for the Sector

In August, Horizon reported on the labor strike at the Burgylau service company (please see our 5 August Latest Analysis), which appeared to have been resolved after authorities acquiesced to the appointment of Saudakas Bekkaliyev as the new chairman of the company’s trade union. Yet Bekkaliyev was subsequently prevented from starting his work, as the local prosecutor, together with the company’s management, opened a criminal case against him on trumped up charges of stealing in the workplace. He was restricted to his apartment, the trade union’s accounts were frozen and police and security blocked the entrance to the office.
