Kazakhstan: Spreading Rallies Test Nazarbayev

On 27 April a few thousand people turned out for rallies in the large provincial cities of Aktobe and Semeya without approval from the authorities. Protestors called against the sale and long-term leasing of farmland to foreigners. The protests first began on 24 April, when several hundred people rallied in the major oil-producing city of Atyrau. These rallies were not covered by official mainstream media, but nevertheless gained traction through social media and opposition outlets.
