Kazakhstan: Social Unrest: Connections to the Oil Sector

Starting in the end of July, over 200 drillers and other employees of the service company Burgylau, which works with OzenMunayGas, began a daily two-hour strike in the western city of Zhanaozen. Authorities there became extremely alarmed, as the memory of the violent labor strike and its suppression in the city in 2011 is still vivid. However, after top officials from the governor’s and city mayor’s offices and key federal and regional trade union representatives arrived, they found a well organized and orderly group that tried its best to comply with all new regulations on strikes and trade unions.
