Kazakhstan: Relations with Uzbekistan: Prospects for Downstream Cooperation

Last week Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev hosted Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev for his first state visit to Astana. The two leaders claimed a breakthrough in their countries’ bilateral relations: they signed nearly 100 commercial agreements and memoranda of understanding worth $840mn in total and pledged to increase bilateral trade from $2bn to $5bn. The two governments also signed an agreement on interregional cooperation and joint economic cooperation for 2017-2019, agreeing to resolve remaining border disputes and double taxation of income and property and easing cross-border travel.
