Kazakhstan: Nazarbayev’s Succession Planning: Delays and Asset Transfers

In recent days, President Nursultan Nazarbayev has been basking in domestic and international praise on the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence. In Taldykorgan, the administrative center of the Almaty region, the local governor opened a statue to Nazarbayev with a public celebration. Kazakh academics claimed that they found evidence that Nazarbayev is a direct descendent of Genghis Khan, while the National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a 10,000-tenge banknote featuring the president’s face. The Mazhilis even voted to rename Astana after the president, though he again responded that this was an unnecessary gesture.
