Kazakhstan: Nazarbayev’s High-Profile Reshuffles: Tightening Regional Security and Showcasing Astana

On 21 June President Nursultan Nazarbayev made a series of major reshuffles in the executive branch. The former head of the Akorda (presidential administration), Nurlan Nigmatulin, is the new head of the Mazhilis (the lower house of parliament). Former Minister of Investments and Development Aset Isekeshev was appointed as the mayor of Astana, while his former deputy Zhenis Kassymbek took over his ministerial position. Yet the most important appointment is the return of the 61-year-old former akim (mayor) of Astana, Adylbek Dzhaksybekov, to the Akorda, which he previously headed from 2004 to 2008.
