Kazakhstan: Nazarbayev Reshuffles Four Regional Governors

On 14 March, during his working tour of the Karaganda region, President Nursultan Nazarbayev reshuffled four regional akims. The move came soon after the enactment of constitutional amendments that supposedly reduced the power of the president. However, the reshuffle clearly shows that the Kazakh political system remains highly centralized and that Nazarbayev ultimately decides how power is distributed, including at the regional level.
