Kazakhstan: Ministerial Reshuffles: Anti-Corruption Campaign and Nazarbayev’s Focus on Legacy

Last week President Nursultan Nazarbayev reshuffled two of his key ministers: Minister of National Economy Kuandyk Bishimbayev and Minister of Foreign Affairs Erlan Idrissov. Bishimbayev, 36, a rising star in the Kazakh government, was replaced by Timur Suleimanov, 38, a much less visible financier and lawyer who had previously represented Kazakhstan in the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev notably thanked Bishimbayev for his hard work, even though he had only held the position since May 2016 and despite the occasional public reprimands he received from the prime minister and parliament over his poor execution of budget planning and competition regulation.
