Kazakhstan: The KNB: A Deeper Look at Massimov

In recent weeks, the KNB and the Agency on State Services Affairs and Anti-Corruption, also known as the Anti-Corruption Service, appear to have begun competing with one another in the political and security realms. The Anti-Corruption Service has taken on some of the most widely publicized embezzlement cases, while the KNB retains virtually all other powers in the security arena, effectively monopolizing cases involving terrorists, political opponents (usually presented as “extremists” or sometimes, “foreign agents”) in addition to some corruption and criminal cases.
