Kazakhstan: KazTransGas Agreement Highlights Sharipbayev’s Increased Influence

On 3 April KazTransGas CEO Kairat Sharipbayev and Margulan Karibekov, the CEO of state-sponsored Karaganda regional development corporation Saryarka, signed a cooperation agreement to explore for coalbed methane in the Karaganda basin. The project in the Sherubainurinsky coal ridge will supply gas for Astana and the Karaganda region. Notably, the gasification of Astana has been highly politicized since President Nursultan Nazarbayev has viewed this development in the capital as a means to showcase the success of his personal projects and policy.
