Kazakhstan: EEU Common Energy Concepts: Prospects and Obstacles

In early March, at a meeting between the prime ministers of the EEU member states, Russian Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev stated that Russia cannot afford to provide favorable gas prices to other EEU members, and that any member dissatisfied with that fact can leave the union. Kazakh officials, along with other Central Asian participants at the meeting, were left dismayed at what they saw as an inconsiderate approach, which many of them publicly challenged after the event.
