Kazakhstan: Central Asia Security Outlook: Ripple Effects from Afghanistan and Syria

On 15 October Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Astana and signed an agreement on the joint development of the Tsentralnaya structure in the northern Caspian Sea. However, after Russia began its military involvement in Syria earlier this month, including air and missile strikes – the latter demonstrating Russia’s long-range missile capabilities in the Caspian Sea – the main topic of discussion with President Nursultan Nazarbayev will be stability in Central Asia, particularly in the context of the growing threat of Islamic extremism in the region.
