Kazakhstan: Astana’s Privatization and Gas Supply Plans

In early November the Kazakh government announced ambitious plans to privatize stakes in over 60 strategic state-controlled companies, including major energy and mineral resources entities such as KazMunayGas (KMG), Samruk Energy, Eurasian Resources Group, Kazzinc and Kazatomprom. The announcement underscored Astana’s longer-term aim to diversify by reducing its dependence on Russia and China and attracting as many foreign investors and government partners as possible, which creates an opportunity for Western companies to negotiate good terms of entry.
