Kazakhstan: Astana’s Diversification Plans: Messages to Its Neighbors

On 9 September President Nursultan Nazarbayev personally presided over a meeting of the interim government, in which ministers reported 0.3% GDP growth for the first eight months of 2016. Though many critics outside the government doubt this figure and its sustainability, a $1bn increase in FDI from 2015 to $5.7bn this year and a 4.2% rise in national currency reserves to $95.2bn have been met with genuine optimism in Astana. At the meeting, officials also detailed the measures the government has taken to diversify investments beyond the oil sector, which in our view were exaggerated.
