Kazakhstan: Astana Moves to Assert Itself in 2016

Kazakhstan is beginning 2016 with reinforced confidence, especially vis-à-vis Russia. Horizon contacts in Astana report that full-scale development is underway for the legal groundwork and regulatory bodies for the city’s international financial center undeterred by Russia’s objections. While remaining silent on Russia’s use of the Caspian Sea for its rocket strikes in Syria in late fall, President Nursultan Nazarbayev has publicly stood his ground with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Kazakhstan’s refusal to sever any trade or political links with Turkey despite Moscow’s wishes.
