Indonesia: The Lapindo PSC’s Controversial Legacy and Political Implications

On 12 January Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said ordered SKK Migas to revoke the Lapindo PSC’s authorization to resume drilling exploratory wells for the time being. On-the-ground preparations had begun on 6 January in the PSC operated by Energy Mega Persada (EMP), the publicly listed oil company of opposition Golkar party head Aburizal Bakrie’s family. However, over the past week Indonesian media have reported growing public concern with this new development.
