Indonesia: Systemic Challenges to Oil and Gas Permitting

On 21 May, during the second plenary session of the 39th IPA annual convention in Jakarta, several government officials spoke on the implementation of a single-window permitting system through the BKPM to improve the process for IOCs. Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Indroyono Susilo highlighted that oil and gas companies are required to secure 341 permits from various government ministries and agencies for production. Notably, this labyrinth of official approvals and permits has increased the timeline to bring an oil and gas project from initial licensing to production to as long as 14 years.
