Indonesia: Implications of Petral’s Dissolution

On 13 May Pertamina CEO Dwi Soetjipto was joined by Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Rini Soemarno, Oil and Gas Governance Reform Team head Faisal Basri and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said to announce that Pertamina’s oil and fuel import monopoly, Petral, would cease its operations and eventually be liquidated. According to follow-up interviews with Soetijipto published in Indonesian media on 1 June, Petral will be audited prior to its dissolution by April 2016. Notably, the decision to shut down Petral and audit the company has President Joko Widodo’s full support.
