Gabon: Economy Minister’s Comments Highlight Obstacles and Opportunities

Minister of Economy Regis Immongault recently made official comments on the economic and budgetary situation in Gabon, stating that the country’s economic growth will reach 4.8% in 2015. Immongault also admitted that the Gabonese government is facing a “difficult macroeconomic environment,” but that it had “initiated numerous actions to preserve economic growth in an environment characterized by the petroleum price crisis.” Notably, oil sector revenue accounts for 90% of Gabon’s export earnings and at least 60% of total government revenue. In addition, the country has been negatively impacted by declining national production levels.
