Brazil: Union Leader’s Comments Foreshadow Potential Sector Unrest

On 31 March Emanuel Cancella, the leader of the National Federation of Oil Workers (FNP), an umbrella labor organization for various oil sector unions, stated during an anti-impeachment rally in Rio de Janeiro that the ousting of the Rousseff administration could lead to Petrobras’ privatization. Cancella also asserted that the ruling Workers’ Party (PT) was responsible for reviving Petrobras and accused the former government, led by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso of the center-right Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), of trying to privatize the industry.
