Brazil: PMDB’s Exit from the Ruling Coalition Further Weakens Rousseff Administration

After months of strained relations, the PMDB officially broke with the PT on 29 March, leaving President Dilma Rousseff vulnerable to a looming impeachment vote schedule for either late April or early May in the Chamber of Deputies. Many PMDB members had already distanced themselves from the government over the last year, voting against government-backed bills and occasionally speaking out against the Rousseff administration. However, the PMDB’s decision to leave the ruling coalition may prompt a string of defections, particularly among high-ranking ministers.
