Brazil: Lula to Stand Trial for Corruption

On 20 September federal judge Sergio Moro ruled that former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party (PT) will stand trial on counts of corruption and money laundering, which he was charged with last week. The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) accuses Lula of being the main leader of a corruption ring in Petrobras that siphoned off 88mn Brazilian reais (some $25mn) as part of the Petrolao scheme that is currently under investigation in the Lava Jato Federal Police operation.
