Brazil: Lula Appointed Chief of Staff Following Historic Anti-Government Protests

On 13 March protesters across Brazil gathered in demonstrations against the government, demanding President Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment. According to polling institute Datafolha, the protest was one of the largest ever in the country – even larger than “Diretas Ja,” the movement that called for direct elections under the military dictatorship in 1984 – with roughly 500,000 people demonstrating in Sao Paulo alone. This marked a significant increase in comparison to last March’s protests, in which roughly 210,000 people gathered in Sao Paulo based on Datafolha’s assessment at the time.
