On 5 May the STF issued an order to forcefully remove Eduardo Cunha from his position as chairman of the Chamber of Deputies. The decision was issued by Teori Zavascki (please see our Personality of the Week) but unanimously approved by all of the court’s members. The STF argued that Cunha could not continue in his position given the current corruption charges leveled against him. The court also accused Cunha of abusing his power as chairman to obstruct these investigations. Since last year, several allegations against Cunha have emerged, with the most prominent being that he illegally stashed money in Swiss bank accounts.
