Brazil: Despite Scandal, Poll Shows Support for State’s Role in Oil and Gas Sector

Despite the corruption scandal plaguing Petrobras, with the ongoing probe implicating government officials within the ruling Workers’ Party (PT), a poll released by polling data institute Datafolha on 23 March indicated that a majority of the Brazilian population (61%) surveyed opposes the idea of privatizing the company. The poll, conducted from 16 to 17 March among 2,842 randomly selected respondents in 172 municipalities nationwide, demonstrated that public support for a state-controlled NOC and state-centric oil and gas sector transcends ideological orientation, age, education and income levels.
