Brazil: Controversy Over Lula’s Deposition Deepens Political Crisis

On 4 March former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was taken into custody by the Federal Police in Sao Paulo for questioning as part of the ongoing Lava Jato investigation. The decision by federal judge Sergio Moro, who is in charge of the investigation, to hold Lula for questioning rather than issuing an invitation or request for his deposition sparked a furious reaction from supporters of the ruling PT, and from Lula himself. Shortly after being held, Lula went to the party’s headquarters and gave a speech harshly condemning the judiciary’s measures and rallying his supporters to defend him.
