Brazil: Continued Impeachment Proceedings: Prospects for a Temer Presidency

On 17 April the lower house of Congress voted to continue impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff with a significant margin of 367 votes in favor of and 137 votes against her dismissal. The process will now move on to the Senate, where 41 votes out of 81 total are necessary for the impeachment to move forward. A meeting to install the upper house impeachment commission, which will deliberate on the legal validity of the charges against Rousseff, is scheduled for 26 April. The Senate vote will then take place on 10 or 11 May.
