Argentina: Ruling in Neuquen Boosts Certainty for Vaca Muerta Development

A recent court case surrounding the Vaca Muerta shale play received a great deal of attention and also pointed to the increasingly positive trend for legal and regulatory stability regarding energy investments. Argentina has struggled for years to build the necessary legal and policy framework that would provide incentives for major development of its world-class Vaca Muerta shale formation. The field has been largely underexplored and untapped due to inflated production costs, as well as labor uncertainty and local concerns – issues that many in the industry call “non-technical” or “above ground” risks.
