Argentina: PepsiCo Protest Highlights Local Actors’ Growing Clout

Around 5,000 people gathered around the Argentine Congress on 18 July, protesting the layoff of 600 workers after a PepsiCo plant closed on 20 June. The case is a typical example of how quickly a local labor dispute in Argentina can escalate. On 26 June, a group of fired workers took over the PepsiCo plant (in the Vicente Lopez district of Buenos Aires province) and were forcefully removed by the police.
